Is it possible?
Once we'd come up with the idea of ENUFF we researched the energy saving technology already available to see how realistic our idea was. We know that all the technology needed to create the ENUFFOMETER is available and that we should be able to make the ENUFFOMETER fairly cheaply. The idea would look more to saving the world than making a profit on it.
ENUFF's ENUFF
There is range of energy saving products already available. And there are devices that will do part of what ENUFF will do but as yet, they are Not ENUFF, since no one has had the foresight to see the advantage of combining all these different technology's in the way that the ENUFFOMETER will do.
For example, you can buy products that will measure the amount of energy being used in your home at that point in time. These are useful and they are intended to make people save energy by showing them the amount they are using and its financial cost. However this is Not ENUFF of an incentive for many people. Our ENUFFOMETER will not only tell people what they're using, but it will also make it easy and effort free to turn off the energy wasting devices. To the right is an ElectriSave monitor which we've been using for a few weeks - read about it here.
You can buy products that will record the electricity used by one socket over a period of time. This is useful for calculating the electrical use of products that are not on continuously, e.g. refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers etc. But this is Not ENUFF. It allows you to know what the electrical use of one device at a time and doesn't actively help to persuade or promote savings. In the ENUFFOMETER the smart plug will include a power monitor and report energy use back to the central display.
You can even get 'Bye-Bye Standby' which lets you remotely turn off an appliance at the plug. But this is still Not ENUFF. Because 'Bye-Bye Standby' doesn't let you measure which of your appliances is using the most electricity so you don't know how to use 'Bye-Bye Standby' to the greatest effect and it can't be programmed to turn off certain appliances at certain times and it can't be connected to a computer. Find out more about Bye Bye Standby.
So we want to invent ENUFF, because ENUFF IS ENUFF.

Dave Cockcroft
We worked with Dave Cockcroft who makes websites for 'green' and eco-friendly projects, such as Stroud Greenshop (http://www.greenshop.co.uk/ ). He helped us with the website making software we have used. He also allowed us to borrow all the products that are photographed on this page.
Current Cost
The closest thing we've found to our ENUFFOMETER is "Current Cost". "Current Cost" (www.currentcost.com) is a detailed monitor for household energy use and stores past information on energy use to allow people to see the progress they are making. The device is still being improved, the finished product will contain a serial port, allowing it to link t o a computer so the data it collects can be looked at in more detail. We got in contact with the man who designed and built Current Cost; Martin D.
We asked Martin for some advice and feedback about ENUFF and it's 1) technical viability, 2) energy saving and awarness raising potential, 3) commercial potential. Having looked at our site Martin relyed that he liked our idea and gave us some advice. He said
"I don't see any technical barriers to what you are suggesting. I am unaware of anyone who has developed something that is a serious contender for the domestic market ... so get busy!"
